GNAR Section Six: Munising to St. Ignace
The section begins with riders leaving Munising and heading east on Hwy 58. You’ll continue on 58 for 16 miles before taking a left on road 720, which is in the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. This road takes you to an overlook before the route continues on a two-track road through the forest. Several turns will bring you back out to 58 for a couple miles before you take a right on the dirt Hurricane River Trail. This 12 mile sandy road will bring you back to 58 which you’ll stay on to the town of Grand Marais, MI. Grand Marais has gas, food and lodging options.
Hwy 58 becomes gravel east of Grand Marais and you’ll ride it until taking a right on 410. Now the sand begins! 410 crosses the Big Two-Hearted River, made famous by Hemingway. A few miles later, you’ll turn onto 414 and eventually get on 506. These roads are truly wild ones, with moderately challenging sand and the feeling of really being out in the woods.
The sand ends when you reach highway 123 and the town of Paradise, MI. From Paradise, you’ll head south on 123 for six miles before turning left on Lake Superior Shoreline Road and then right to get back on dirt on West East-West Road.
The next 50 miles of the route consist of a series of gravel roads with short paved sections between them as you make your way south to St. Ignace. At 160 miles into the section, you’ll pass under I-75 and leave the dirt roads behind for good as the final paved portion takes you through St. Ignace to the route’s end at Bridge View Park.
The Great Northern Adventure Route ends at the Mackinac Bridge, a five mile long suspension bridge that connects the Upper Peninsula to the lower. Congratulations! You’ve completed the GNAR!
