Eje Cafetero | Nevado del Ruiz and El Sifon Hot Springs
If you thought no seasons means no snow, think again! The Colombian Andes' coffee region keeps within its heart the Los Nevados National Park, a natural reserve filled with snow-capped volcanoes, like the Nevado del Ruiz, glaciers, moorlands and even a most beautiful, naturally isolated hot springs spot known as El Sifon. Depart the city of Pereira and ride across the Viaduct and Helicoidal Bridge, two architectural highlights of this town, on your way to Manizales, another of the coffee region's main towns. Fuel up there, because it's all uphill and incredibly twisty from here! Once you get to La Esperanza, a traveler's stop also known as 'El Ocho', take your last break before heading into the park. There will be few to no restrooms once you go inside. NOTE: departing before dawn is recommended to avoid being at the National Park after dark. Cars: this trip is doable in most SUV's, but a 4x4 is highly recommended for the park section. Motorcycles: bring multiple layers, as the temperature will significantly decrease as you climb. Drink plenty of fluids and beware of altitude sickness. Photo of the Nevado by Luis Alejandro Bernal Romero, CC BY-SA 2.0 <https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0>, via Wikimedia Commons
