Fossil Ridge OHV Trail 478
Fossil Ridge Trail is an approximately 11.5 mile point-to-point off-road route located southeast of Crested Butte, Colorado. Beginning at Gold Creek Trailhead, the single track, dirt/rock surface route climbs to the west, passing south of Sheep Mountain before intersecting with Boulder Lake Trail 478.3A (which can be added to the route as an out-and-back if the rider would like to check out Boulder Lake and/or go for a swim). Continuing west, the route follows the Fossil Ridge geological formation before terminating at Beaver McIntyre Trail 472, at which point the rider can head back to their original starting point or navigate to other trails/destinations. Fossil Ridge Trail provides riders with a medium-length but highly technical option for single track routes in the Gunnison National Forest. In terms of difficulty the route is rated as “Hard”. Due to the terrain involved, it is recommended that only motorcycles with adequate off-road capability attempt this route. Fossil Ridge Trail is a seasonally restricted route, and is usually impassable to wheeled vehicles during the winter, spring, and sometimes into the early summer. It is recommended to check current conditions with the local USFS district office prior to taking on this route. All vehicles must remain on designated roads and trails.
