GNAR Section Four: Silver City To L'Anse
Riders begin Section Four by leaving Silver City and heading toward the city of Ontonagon. You’ll head out of town on Hwy 38 and continue until taking a left on Hwy 26. This is a somewhat long stretch of pavement, but it is worth it for the left turn on Poyhonan Road, a very fun, winding dirt road that takes you toward the town of Misery Bay. Despite its name, Misery Bay is neither miserable nor much of a town, however, it does have a lovely beach and is worth a stop if you need another great view of Lake Superior,
You’ll head out of town on Misery Bay road and take a left on North Road which will lead you to Cross Cut Road and a return to dirt. Eventually, and after a few turns you’ll end up at the channel that forms the Keweenaw and you’ll follow this to the city of Houghton. Houghton is home to Michigan Tech University and has lots of food, lodging and fuel options.
In Houghton, you’ll get to experience an intersection that seems far too chaotic and confusing for a city this size as you head north across the lift bridge to the Keweenaw Peninsula. This is the only bridge to the Keeweenaw, so pay attention because you’ll be doing it again when you come back south. The lift bridge allows large ships to pass under as they cut through the channel and avoid the long trip around the peninsula.
The Keweenaw Peninsula was home to the largest elemental copper deposit in the world and mines here once supplied three quarters of all the copper used in the United States. The boom lasted for about 100 years before the mines ceased operation in the late 1960s. The Keweenaw is a National Historic Park and the National Park Service has exhibits in various locations to explain the rich history of the region.
The route takes riders back down the channel and along the Lake Superior shoreline. After a quick gravel detour inland, you’ll be back along the shore. The section of pavement on Hwy 26 between Eagle Harbor and Copper Harbor is one of the most scenic and fun to ride pieces of highway in the United States, with lots of curves and elevation changes and spectacular views of Lake Superior.
Copper Harbor is a fun and funky town with a gas station and several food and lodging options. It is a world-class mountain biking destination and the port for one of the ferries serving Isle Royale National Park. This is a great place to spend a night.
If you have time, consider a ride out to High Rock Bay. This is a challenging road that often includes a lot of water holes, but the view is worth it and it is also one of the most beautiful places to camp in the United States.
Upon leaving Copper Harbor, you’ll head back down the Keweenaw on Mandan Road, a hilly dirt road through the forest. This road will lead you to Hwy 41, which you’ll ride briefly before taking a left on Lac La Belle Road. This road leads you to the Mount Bohemia ski area before taking you back down the peninsula toward Gay and Houghton. After a few turns, you’ll find yourself back in Houghton trying to negotiate that crazy intersection.
From Houghton, riders will finish the section with a ride on Hwy 41 to the city of L’Anse.
