GNAR Section Three: Duluth To Silver City
Section Three begins with riders crossing the St. Louis River and entering Wisconsin. As you cross the river, be sure to look at St. Louis Bay to your right, as this is the furthest inland port in the United States for ocean-going vessels. The Duluth/Superior port is a major shipping port for taconite and grain.
You’ll head south on Hwy 53 through the city of Superior and beyond until you reach Hwy 13 and make a turn to the east. You’ll stay on 13 with a short gavel detour for twenty-ish miles before getting your first taste of northern Wisconsin sand on Old 13 Road just after leaving Port Wing. This hilly, sandy road continues most of the way to Herbster. When you reach Herbster, don’t miss a short detour to Herbster Park with its lovely beach on Lake Superior.
The route goes south out of Herbster on Lenawee Road and you’ll quickly find yourself back under the forest canopy. The next 25 miles are a mix of gravel and challenging sand. At one point you’ll exit the forest canopy and enter the Moquah Barrens, an open area with some deep sand to keep you focused on your riding. Make sure to stop and take a look around! The route turns from sand back to gravel before you reach Hwy 2.
Between Hwy 2 and the town of Delta is a stretch of fantastic forest two-track road. Enjoy!
Leaving Delta, let your bike lean on the curvy paved road between Delta and the town of Drummond, where you can fuel up if you need to.
With the exception of leaving Drummond on 63 and a short ride through the town of Mellen (gas, food), the next 70 miles will be almost entirely dirt or gravel and vary from wide roads to narrow ATV tracks. This is some really enjoyable riding through the Wisconsin northwoods.
You’ll eventually emerge from the forest and get on Hwy 77 near Pence, WI. This area was once home to a number of iron mines and you’ll ride through the towns of Pence, Montreal, and Hurley before arriving at the Michigan border at Ironwood, MI, where you can find gas, food and lodging.
The route follows Hwy 2 between Ironwood and Bessemer, where you’ll turn north on Moore Road. Moore Road will lead you to Forest Road 121 and then a right turn on Forest Road 125. This is a very fun two-track road through the forest. When we rode this in 2025, there was a culvert out requiring a fun bit of problem solving by bushwacking and doing a little water crossing before getting back on track and eventually emerging on Presque Isle Road.
Presque Isle Road takes you to the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness Area where you’ll hang a right on the South Boundary Road. This road is paved, but is really beautiful, twisting and fun. Enjoy the ride and be ready for the spectacular view when the road ends on the shore of Lake Superior. There is something really special about emerging from the forest to be greeted by the vastness of the lake. Silver City has lodging and food. Gas is available a few miles into the next section in Ontonagon.
