This 964-mile paved route begins in Duluth, Minnesota, at Aerostich. It follows the North Shore of Lake Superior on MN State Route 61 to Grand Marais, then backtracks to Duluth and continues east into Wisconsin via U.S. Route 53. It follows WI State Route 13 east along the southern shore of Lake Superior to Ashland, then continues east on U.S. Route 2 to Wakefield, Michigan. It continues east on MI State Route 28 / U.S. Route 41 to Negaunee, MI. After a shortcut on County Road 480, the route reconnects with MI State Route 28 east to Munising. It proceeds east on County Road H-58 (Adams Trail) to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. At Deer Park, the route turns south on County Road 407 and follows a series of roads until its reaches U.S. Route 2, heading east along the northern shore of Lake Michigan. It crosses the Mackinac Bridge on Interstate 75, then heads west to Sturgeon Bay Beach and south to MI State Route 119 (M-119) and through the Tunnel of Trees. It continues south on U.S. Route 31 to Traverse City, and the follows the shore of Lake Michigan on MI State Route 22 (M-22) to Manistee.
