Eje Cafetero | Valle del Cauca Loop
Starting with a loaded Colombian breakfast at the popular restaurant, also known for its delicious desserts, 'La Vaca Fantastica', and a quick stop at the 'Mirador Puente Blanco', a magnificent view of the La Vieja River, you'll be heading down into the valley. Though coffee is produced everywhere in the coffee region, the Valle del Cauca is popular for its extensive sugar cane crops, which extend to over 200,000 hectares! The view is amazing and the road leading to the town of Roldanillo is in excellent condition. If you're into art, the modern art museum in honor of the renowned Colombian painter, Omar Rayo, is located here. If you're more of an adrenaline junkie, there's numerous places in town that will bring you up the mountain, near El Dovio, that offer thrilling paragliding experiences. Heading back down into the valley, the town of La Union has something very special to offer: a walk through the vineyards and the most unique wine flavors as you tour the 'Parque Nacional de la Uva' (Grape National Park) and all its attractions (casagrajales.com.co/nuestros-lugares). Last but not least, this 100mi trip ends in the heart of the charming town of Cartago. It's main town square, Plaza de Bolivar, is filled with dozens of coffee stands, tall trees, iguanas and even sloths! If you're in town early enough, you might also get to tour the 'Casa del Virrey' (House of the Viceroy), a XVIII century Colonial building, constructed for the Spanish Viceroy that never came.
